Space! Who among us is immune to the thrill of what it might hold?

I’ve always been fascinated by space and the race to explore it. I designed this blanket over the course of nearly two years because I wanted every element to carry a very specific meaning. Many of those ideas were surprisingly difficult to portray in mosaic crochet.

First, I wanted to capture the excitement and anticipation of the era when the entire world seemed captivated by the race to reach space. Second, this pattern is an homage to Laika, the first animal to orbit Earth. (See if you can spot the hidden detail that pays tribute to her historic journey!)

Finally, it was important to me to convey the feeling that, through the exploration of space, the impossible suddenly felt within reach. Space no longer seemed distant. It became something people could imagine themselves being part of. I tried to capture that sense of wonder by placing the universe just beyond the living room window.

I had so much fun exploring themes of time, technology, curiosity, and humanity in this design, and I truly hope you enjoy making it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

This pattern is 200 stitches and 250 rows, measuring approximately 57 inches (145 cm) by 72 inches (182 cm) in worsted weight yarn with a 5.0 mm hook. It uses approximately 2282 yards (2086 meters) of color A, the lightest color yarn you will use, and 2479 yards (2267 meters) of color B, the darkest color yarn you will use.

It Includes split charts marked with a darker line every 10 stitches, as well as a nice large one-page chart for Knit Companion. It also includes written instructions which are suitable for both left and right-handed crocheters.

Note--This pattern starts with the darker yarn color that you wish to use
This pattern does not teach you how to do mosaic crochet. It does not teach you to switch colors within a row (an understanding of how to switch colors within a row is not necessary to complete this pattern, however a link to a reference video is included should you choose to do so).
